This month, our project had the honor of being represented by four distinct research posters and presentations at the prestigious American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Annual Symposium, held in San Francisco, California. This event serves as a critical forum for healthcare informatics professionals to share innovative research and discuss advancements that impact patient care and health outcomes.
From November 9th to 13th, two members of our team attended the conference to introduce the innovative web-based platform we have been developing to advance injury research and improve care for survivors of violence. The platform integrates interdisciplinary approaches with cutting-edge technology. Prof. Janusz Wojtusiak presented a podium abstract titled “Interdisciplinary Platform for Bruise Image Research,” detailing technical aspects of designing the platform. Another poster, “Ontology-based Database Design for an Injury Research Platform,” focused on the database design, highlighting the hybrid structure and ontological representation of concepts. This work was presented by Dr. Mohammad Qodrati.
Two additional posters were showcased in a specialized collaborative workshop on “Violence and Injury Prevention.” These focused on the performance, explainability, and fairness of deep machine learning models built using data from our repository. The first, “Optical Character Recognition for Information Extraction from Handwritten Assault and Violence Reports,” explored the application of OCR technologies to digitize paper-based reports. This work was a collaboration with Prof. Kevin Lybarger and was presented by his doctoral student, Md. Mushfiqur Rahman. The second, “Enhancing Bruise Detection in Diverse Populations Using Alternate Light Sources, Deep Learning, and Explainable AI,” evaluated the performance of our previously developed models across the study’s diverse population, with a particular focus on sub-populations with varying demographic characteristics.
Through these contributions, our team demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary research in healthcare. The AMIA Symposium offered an invaluable opportunity to engage with thought leaders, gather feedback, and reaffirm our resolve to drive meaningful change in injury research and violence prevention.
