Graduate Research Assistants Emily Swann and Vibhavari Gadhe, under the guidance of Professor Scafide, delivered an enlightening lecture on bruise detection research to high school students in the “Introduction to Health Sciences” class as part of the Early Identification Program (EIP) at George Mason University.
During the session, students learned about the definition of a bruise and the critical importance of detecting it. Emily and Vibhavari also introduced the concept of ALS (Alternate Light Source) and explained how it plays a vital role in identifying bruises that might not be visible to the naked eye. To bring the lesson to life, they demonstrated the use of ALS on artificially created bruises using a makeup kit.
The interactive session didn’t stop there! Instructor Joselyn Andrade and co-instructor Arielle Kadio organized a fun and creative activity where students got hands-on by creating artificial bruises with makeup. The excitement peaked as awards were given for the best two bruises, showcasing the students’ impressive efforts.
Overall, it was an excellent session with outstanding student engagement. The combination of learning and hands-on activities made for an unforgettable experience in health sciences!
